Children and young people are a much valued part of our parish community and are encouraged to take part in liturgies and activities. We are fortunate in having a dedicated group of catechists who give freely of their time and talents to the children.
At St Mary’s, Cullercoats, we have an excellent, well attended Children’s Liturgy which is held every Sunday (school holidays excepted) at 11 o’clock Mass. Ages of the children attending range from 3 years to about 9 or 10 years. The purpose of Children’s Liturgy is to present the Liturgy of the Word suitably adapted to make it relevant to the lives and experiences of young children. It gives them the opportunity to understand the Gospel message, and participate in the celebration of the Mass at their own level.
Music, drama, videos and dance, as well as visual stimulus and story telling are used by the catechists during the time spent with the children.
